Aha: This is how often you should clean your pet’s food bowl
It’s tempting to quickly throw some kibble into your pet’s food bowl when it’s empty, and put off cleaning it. But when you don’t clean the bowl regularly, bacteria and fungi get free rein. Therefore, it is important to clean the food bowl regularly.
Dirty food bowl
Whether you have a dog or cat, chances are you conveniently refill the food bowl with kibble without cleaning it. Especially with dry food, this is tempting because the bowl doesn’t look as dirty when it’s empty. But appearances can be deceiving, as a dirty food bowl is a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi and even parasites that can make your pet sick. Especially if you have an old or fragile pet, you want to avoid this. Regular cleaning is therefore important, because let’s face it, we eat our meals off a clean plate, don’t we?
Cleaning regularly
Actually, you should clean your pet’s food bowl daily. Is the bowl outside? Then it is even wise to do this twice a day. Just rinsing under the tap is not enough, because unfortunately you do not remove all the bacteria that way. Use hot water, detergent and a dishwashing brush. Purchase a special dishwashing brush for this, because then to wash your own dishes with the same is obviously not so fresh. After cleaning the food bowl, rinse it well so that no residue of detergent remains. The smell of dish soap is not pleasant for pets’ sensitive noses while eating.
Good feeding bowl
By buying the right food bowl, you can also make cleaning much easier. Smooth materials like stone or stainless steel are strong and don’t damage easily, plus they are easy to clean. Plastic is a lot less suitable because it can scratch quickly, making dirt harder to remove.
