For this reason, your cat prefers water from the running tap

Have you ever wondered why your cat is always so fascinated by the running tap, while completely ignoring the water bowl? You’re not the only one! In fact, many cat owners know this phenomenon all too well. But guess what? Your cat has a penchant for fresh, running water for a reason.

Ancestry

While it looks pretty cute when your cat drinks from the tap, it’s not exactly hygienic. But your furry friend does this for a reason. A very long time ago, before cats were incredibly spoiled by their owners, they mainly drank from running streams. Stagnant water they saw as a source of bacteria. So no wonder your cat today still prefers the fresh, running water from the tap to the water that has been waiting for him in his bowl for a while. So next time you catch your cat at the faucet, remember that this behavior is deeply rooted in their history.

Not at food

So cats – as the cat owners among us well know – can be quite picky when it comes to their drinking habits. Likewise, they dislike it when their water bowl is too close to their food. In addition, they like it when their water bowl is not too close to the wall. Make sure they have the opportunity to stand behind it so they can keep an eye on the whole space. You hear it: it all comes together rather precisely with our furry friends.

Shape and material

Because the shape of the bowl and the material it is made of is also important. Apparently, cats prefer to drink from an oval bowl. If they drink from a round container, there is a greater chance that their whiskers will touch the edge of the container. And they don’t like that at all!

Finally, they prefer not to drink their water from a plastic bowl. Why? The plastic material can give a strange taste to the water. Therefore, choose a water bowl made of metal or ceramic to give your cat the best possible drinking experience.
