Cute! This is what your dog dreams about

What sweet dreams does your dog have as he snuggles in his basket at night? A nice run on the beach, a full bowl of dog treats or a new stuffed toy? The answer is even more adorable than you think!

Do dogs really dream?

Professor Dr. Deirdre Barrett of Harvard Medical University studied this question. And what it turned out, dogs actually dream in their sleep! To what extent the critters’ experience resembles ours as humans is not yet entirely clear. However, research has shown that the sleep cycle of most mammals is similar to that of humans. That means that our dogs, too, first enter a deep sleep phase and brain activity decreases. And then it comes: REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement, and these are the moments in our sleep when we as humans have dreams. Since it has been shown that mammals also enter this stage, so chances are they dream too!

Cute dreams

So what do our faithful four-legged friends dream about? Secretly, we are all hoping for this answer, and we get it right: the critters dream about their owners! “People dream about things they are interested in during the day, and it is the same with animals. Dogs are very attached to their owners and therefore it is plausible that dogs dream about their faces and smells,” explains Professor Barrett. Now we like our sleeping critters even more than they already were!
